17 die, 73 missing in Taraba boat mishap

A devastating incident unfolded on the 29th of October, 2023, in the Mayo Ranewo Community along the banks of River Benue, within the Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, when a boat carrying 104 passengers tragically capsized.

The catastrophe has resulted in a distressing toll of lives lost and individuals missing.

According to official reports from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Yola Operations Office, the Taraba State Emergency Management Agency (TSEMA) alerted them to the boat mishap involving 104 passengers in the remote Mayo Ranewo community, situated within the Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.

Promptly following the report, the NEMA Yola Operations Office activated a comprehensive search and rescue operation.

Of the 104 passengers aboard the ill-fated vessel, a total of fourteen (14) individuals have been successfully rescued, while the grim task of recovering the deceased has accounted for seventeen (17) lives.

A harrowing Seventy-Three (73) persons, however, remain unaccounted for, heightening concerns and the urgency of ongoing response efforts.

The coordinated response operations are still in full swing, with the invaluable assistance of local divers contributing to the search and rescue mission for the yet-unaccounted passengers.

NEMA, TSEMA, and various other stakeholders continue to work tirelessly to alleviate this tragic situation and provide relief to the affected individuals and their families.
