The Nigerian press: A lost compass?

Opinion

By Yinka Fabowale

The Fourth Estate of the Realm: Editors, reporters and colleagues, please what guides our definition of what we report? Dollars, Naira, political and ethnic allegiance; OR sanctity of the facts, in the consciousness of our social responsibility?

A thing or person (s) is distinguished and named by the character, nature and activity he/it/they engage(s) in. Indeed, they are what they do. And that’s their names. So, are bandits and terrorists the same in meaning and conception? What drives the constant and ‘sheepish’ changing of the labels – armed herdsmen, kidnappers, bandits, militia, terrorists, etc in our media?Fear, intimidation, or cheap and filthy lucre?

Can we stop this dangerous, willful self and mass deception and remember we are all in this, and that we all will reap the  just reward of how we contribute to building or destroying the society we get. There is NO ESCAPE from KARMA! It will eventually catch up with the little as the big evil doers!

So, draw courage from your conscience and call a spade a spade, when next you report those unprovoked communal attacks and killing of innocent souls, the kidnapping and gory carnage by blood-thirsty savages on rampage across the land. Don’t dress up the culprits in camouflage! If you do, you are complicit in the crime and destruction of this beautiful and potentially great Country fast widening into a huge terrorist camp.

The nation needs the Light, your light to heal and grow! You can give it now with your truth!

May the Lord help us all.

Amen.
