The Osun State Government has declared Thursdays as environmental sanitation days across the state, introducing a compulsory two-hour exercise from 8am to 10am with immediate effect.
The government said the initiative, approved by Governor Ademola Adeleke, was designed to tackle indiscriminate waste disposal, improve environmental hygiene and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.
The State Head of Service and Chairman of the newly constituted Osun State Environmental Sanitation Task Force, Samuel Ayanleye Aina, announced the directive in a statement issued on Thursday.
Under the arrangement, civil servants, market operators, shop owners, artisans and businesses, including shopping malls, stores and other commercial establishments, are expected to participate physically in the exercise during the designated hours.
Aina said security and law enforcement personnel would be deployed to support the exercise and ensure compliance with the government’s directive.
He, however, clarified that the officers would not arrest residents during the sanitation period, explaining that their primary responsibility would be to ensure participation and compliance.
According to the statement, the exercise is intended to discourage the dumping of refuse at unauthorised locations and address other practices that violate environmental regulations.

The government added that regular participation would help maintain cleaner surroundings and minimise the risk of disease outbreaks across the state.
Aina urged residents, traders, artisans and business owners to cooperate with the government by observing the weekly exercise and taking responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
