What began as an opportunity to buy essential food items at cheaper prices reportedly turned into anxiety and frustration for residents of Osogbo and its environs after the warehouse of a food distribution company was suddenly found locked.

The development left several customers who had allegedly paid millions of naira for food packages scrambling for answers, with some converging on the Odi-Olowo area of Osogbo on Monday to demand explanations and refunds.

The company, whose name was not immediately disclosed, had reportedly attracted customers with packages containing household staples such as rice, cooking oil, spaghetti and semovita, which were offer at prices said to be below prevailing market rates.

For many of the customers, the arrangement appeared attractive at a time when the rising cost of food had continued to put pressure on household budgets.

They reportedly made advance payments, expecting to return on scheduled distribution dates to collect their food packages.

But the expectation changed to uncertainty when customers arrived and discovered that the warehouse was locked.

Attempts by some of the affected customers to establish contact with the company’s operators were also reportedly unsuccessful, deepening concerns over the money already paid into the scheme.

By Monday, the situation had  drawn a crowd to the Odi-Olowo area as customers sought information about the whereabouts of the company’s operators and the fate of their payments.

Police personnel were also reportedly deployed to the area as the number of concerned customers increased.

One of the affected customers, Owolabi Kafayat, said she and others were attracted to the scheme because it offered an opportunity to obtain basic food items at prices they considered affordable.

According to her, concerns began when the expected distribution failed to take place and efforts to contact the operators did not yield the desired response.

The sudden closure has left customers asking a number of questions: What happened to the company? Where are its operators? And what will become of the money already paid by customers

Some of the affected residents alleged that millions of naira had been collected from customers who subscribed to the scheme.

However, the exact amount involved, the number of customers affected and the circumstances surrounding the closure could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report.

The residents are consequently calling for an investigation to establish what happened and determine the status of their payments.

For some customers, the attraction had been simple: buy essential food items in bulk at a cheaper price and reduce the pressure of rising household expenses.

But with the warehouse shut and the operators unreachable, that expectation has given way to uncertainty.

The affected residents are now demanding that the company either fulfils its obligation by supplying the food packages they paid for or refund their money.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the company explaining the closure or responding to the allegations raised by the customers.

The residents are therefore awaiting clarification on the company’s operations, the status of their payments and whether the food packages they paid for will eventually be supplied.
