Few days after at least 30 people died and 50 others were hospitalised in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State following their alleged consumption of concoctions mixed with locally brewed alcohol, popularly called ogogoro, the state government on Thursday cautioned against the production and consumption of unverified concoctions in the state
It cautioned residents against the consumption of all unapproved substances, herbal drinks, concoctions and other products not certified as safe for human consumption.
The government gave the caution in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Idowu Ajanaku
According to the statement: “The Government urges members of the public to exercise utmost caution and desist from patronising or consuming substances of doubtful origin, stressing that the safety, health and wellbeing of the people remain key priorities of the present administration.
“The Government also strongly cautions sellers, producers and distributors of uncertified substances to immediately desist from such practices, as the production, sale and distribution of unapproved substances pose serious risks to public health and may attract appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law.
“The Government further cautions citizens, particularly youths, against drug abuse and the unauthorised use or consumption of substances capable of causing serious health complications or death. Residents are advised to obtain medicines and other consumable products only from authorised and regulated outlets, and to seek professional medical advice rather than resorting to unverified remedies or substances.
“The government is currently investigating the Odigbo incident to establish the actual cause of the deaths. Assuring the people of Ondo State that relevant government agencies are working diligently to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Government also appeals to residents to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic.
“The State Government commends the proactive intervention of the Chairman of Odigbo Local Government Area, Hon. Taiwo Adegboye, in responding promptly to the situation and supporting efforts aimed at protecting the lives and wellbeing of residents. The Government assures the people of Ondo State that necessary measures are being taken to safeguard public health and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
“The Government therefore reiterates its warning to all residents, vendors, producers and distributors to shun drug abuse and the unauthorised production, sale, distribution or consumption of illegal and uncertified substances. The Government will continue to take appropriate measures, in accordance with existing laws and regulations, to protect the health and safety of citizens.
“Citizens are encouraged to promptly report suspicious activities involving the production, sale or distribution of dangerous, illegal or unapproved substances to the appropriate authorities. The Government emphasises that protecting lives and promoting a safe and healthy society is a collective responsibility that requires the cooperation of all residents.”
