A vigilante member identified as Sunday, popularly known as Apetu, has reportedly died shortly after a sexual encounter with a woman in Ile-Ife, Osun State, with the woman subsequently arrested by the police.
The incident occurred at about 2:30pm on Sunday in the Odi-Olokun area of Ile-Ife.
The woman was reportedly taken into custody at the Moore Police Division following the man’s sudden deterioration after the encounter.
According to a situation report attributed to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Apetu was said to have been in severe distress shortly after the sexual encounter.
A video circulating on social media showed the man at Ooni Ilare Street, allegedly gasping and screaming while pleading with the woman to give him urine.
The circumstances surrounding his request and the events that preceded his death, however, remain unclear.
Apetu was later confirmed dead, while his remains were deposited at the morgue of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife.
Meanwhile, conflicting accounts have emerged concerning the possible cause of the man’s sudden death.
Some residents reportedly attributed the incident to what they described as “thunderbolt,” a traditional belief that a person affected by such a phenomenon could allegedly transfer its effects to another person through sexual contact.
However, there is no established medical or scientific evidence to support the claim, while the police have not confirmed any connection between the man’s death and the traditional belief.
A competent police officer of the Osun State Police Command confirmed that the command was aware of reports circulating about the incident and cautioned members of the public against spreading unverified information.
The officer said the circumstances surrounding the man’s death would be investigated, while medical examination would help establish the actual cause of death.
The police urged residents to remain calm and allow investigators and relevant medical authorities to establish what led to the sudden death.
The incident has generated concern in Ile-Ife, particularly because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the man’s sudden deterioration and death.
