With Nigerians grappling with economic hardship and political uncertainties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged citizens not to despair but to remain steadfast in their commitment to democratic ideals as the nation marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

In a statement signed by its national Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed to commemorate June 12, the opposition party congratulated Nigerians on the occasion and paid tribute to the resilience, patriotism and unwavering commitment of citizens to democratic governance despite prevailing challenges across the country.

The PDP described Democracy Day as a significant milestone in the nation’s political history, noting that it serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists and ordinary Nigerians in the struggle for democratic rule.

According to the party, the observance of June 12 should inspire renewed hope among citizens, even as they contend with economic difficulties, insecurity and governance concerns.

The party maintained that democracy remains the most viable system for guaranteeing the rights and welfare of citizens, stressing that Nigerians must continue to defend democratic institutions and uphold the rule of law.

It commended Nigerians for their steadfastness in sustaining democratic governance over the years and urged them not to lose faith in the country’s ability to overcome its current challenges.

The PDP also paid homage to heroes of democracy, particularly those who made sacrifices in the struggle against military rule and in the quest for democratic freedoms.

While acknowledging the difficulties facing many households, the party called on leaders at all levels to remain accountable, responsive and committed to policies that would improve the living conditions of citizens.

The opposition party further urged government institutions to deepen democratic values, strengthen transparency and ensure that governance reflects the aspirations of the people.

Reaffirming its commitment to democratic principles, the PDP pledged to continue advocating policies and programmes aimed at national unity, economic recovery and inclusive development.

The party encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful, united and actively engaged in the democratic process, expressing confidence that the country would emerge stronger through collective resolve and adherence to democratic ideals.
