Tragedy at OAU as medical student dies during clinical exam

A wave of grief has engulfed Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, following the sudden death of a medical student, Oreoluwa Emmanuel Adewole, who passed away during a clinical viva examination.

Adewole, a Part IV student in the University’s College of Health Sciences, reportedly complained of chest pain while undergoing the examination, according to an official statement issued by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju.

The statement explained that the incident occurred unexpectedly during the clinical assessment session, prompting immediate response from lecturers and fellow medical students who were present.

He was quickly attended to on site, with efforts made to stabilize and revive him.
Despite the prompt medical attention and all interventions carried out, the student was confirmed dead shortly afterward.

The tragic development has thrown the entire university community into mourning, especially within the College of Health Sciences, where colleagues and faculty members described the incident as devastating and painful.

Reacting to the loss, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, staff, and students of the institution. He extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, describing the death as an irreparable loss not only to the university but also to the medical profession in the making.

The Vice-Chancellor also commiserated with the student’s friends and colleagues, urging them to take solace in the will of God during this difficult period.

Meanwhile, the University Management has said it is engaging relevant authorities and the bereaved family to provide necessary support, while also seeking to better understand the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.

The institution prayed for strength and comfort for the family and the entire university community.

Oreoluwa Emmanuel Adewole has since been laid to rest in the hearts of many as tributes continue to pour in from students and staff who described him as dedicated, focused, and promising.
