Ondo state Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has declared that the state maintains a zero-tolerance stance against the possession, trafficking and consumption of hard drugs, warning that offenders will face the full weight of the law.

He made the declaration in Akure during the public destruction of drug exhibits by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelami, the governor said his administration has intensified advocacy and awareness campaigns to curb the rising trend of drug abuse among young people.

According to him, “This administration is taking proactive steps to tackle the menace through sustained sensitisation programmes and collaboration with relevant stakeholders. There is no room for hard drugs in our state”

He stressed that Ondo state will not tolerate the activities of individuals or groups involved in illicit drug dealings.

In his remarks, Chairman of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), who was represented by DCGN Ningi, explained that the destroyed exhibits were from cases that had been successfully adjudicated by the Federal High Court, Akure Division.

Marwa disclosed that a total of 83.35 tons of assorted illicit drugs were set ablaze during the exercise. The substances, he said, were intercepted by NDLEA operatives between January 2017 and December 2024.

Also speaking at the event, The state commander of NDLEA, Daniel Sallah, thanked the state government for its support in the areas of welfare and logistics.

The event attracted key stakeholders including heads of other security agencies, state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), youth-led organisations, traditional institutions and religious bodies, among others.
