Ahead of the 2027 general elections, a broad-based national coalition, spanning civil society organisations, professional bodies, labour groups, artisan associations, and other grassroots networks, has unveiled plans to back President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term with a massive target of 20 million signatures.
The coalition, spearheaded by the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria (COCSON), says it extends far beyond the traditional civic space, bringing together over 1,500 groups from diverse sectors of the Nigerian society.
A statement issued by COCSON’s National Secretary, Tabuko Kennedy, revealed that the landmark convention is set for May 17, 2026, bringing together leaders and representatives from diverse groups in what is projected to be “the largest endorsement gathering in Nigeria’s history.”
He explained that the event will provide a formal platform for the coalition to jointly declare support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Kennedy further noted that the planned 20 million signatures campaign is designed to demonstrate widespread grassroots acceptance and national consensus across regions, professions, and socio-economic divides.
According to him, the initiative is not only symbolic but also a strategic effort to consolidate support well ahead of the election cycle.
He added that mobilisation efforts are already underway in various states, with coordinators engaging communities, trade groups, and youth organisations to ensure broad participation.
The coalition, he said, is leveraging both physical outreach and digital platforms to achieve the ambitious signature target within the stipulated timeframe.
“Participants will include human rights organisations, medical and legal professionals, trade and artisan unions, community-based organisations, and influential labour leaders, reflecting a wide national spread and multi-sectoral backing,” he said.
