Court acquits suspended DCP Abba Kyari over insufficient evidence

News

The Federal High Court has discharged and acquitted suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, bringing an end to a major legal battle that has attracted nationwide attention.

The court held that the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence to substantiate the allegations filed against the former head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

As a result, the court ruled that the charges could not be sustained under the law.

Kyari had been under intense public and legal scrutiny following investigations into alleged misconduct linked to his tenure in the police force. The case had drawn significant interest due to its implications for law enforcement accountability in the country.

Delivering the judgment, the court stated that the prosecution did not meet the legal threshold required to secure a conviction. Consequently, the judge ordered that Kyari be discharged and acquitted of all the charges brought before the court.

The ruling marks a significant development in one of Nigeria’s most closely followed law enforcement cases, effectively clearing Kyari of the allegations and closing a high-profile chapter in the nation’s criminal justice proceedings.
