The All Progressives Congress (APC), has said that in compliance with a court order stopping its Tuesday’s Ondo State congress, it directed its Congress Committee in Ondo State to suspend the exercise.
A federal high court sitting in Akure on Monday, had stopped the congress after granting the application of some aggrieved members of the party.
The party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, made the disclosure on Tuesday evening during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’, while reacting to the conduct of party’s state congress in Ondo State.
He said, “We woke up to a court order by the Federal High Court, and as a law-abiding party, we directed our team in that place to wait until the court order is vacated or there is a contrary order from the court.
“We are not a party of illegality. Even though we believe that the court order ought not to have been granted to restrain the holding of the congress because it is not a perishable item, when there is a positive order of court, you must respect it.
“You must respect it, even when you file an application to set it aside, unless there is a statutory provision to the contrary. So we are obeying the court order, but of course we are going to challenge that order for it to be vacated.”
At the congress, a former member of the House of Representatives and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s aide, Babatunde Kolawole emerged as chairman and Alex Kalejiaye as Secretary, and 34 others were elected.
A Federal High Court sitting in Akure had on Monday issued an ex parte order restraining INEC and the APC from proceeding with the congress following an application filed by some aggrieved members of the party.
