Ex-Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State and the embattled Owa of Igbajo, Oba Phillip Adegboyega Famodun III, has passed away after a brief illness.
His death marks the end of a notable era in both the political and traditional spheres of Osun State.
.
Oba Famodun, who became the Owa of Igbajo after an extensive political career and leadership within the APC, was known for his influence in Osun politics and his efforts toward peace and cultural preservation within his community.
His reign, though marked by legal and political disputes, was dedicated to unity, heritage, and development in Igbajo.
One of the earliest reactions came from a former Osun Amotekun Commander, Brig.-Gen. Biodun Bashir Adewinmbi (Rtd), who expressed deep sorrow over the monarch’s death.
In a personally signed condolence message, Adewinmbi described the departed Oba Famodun as “a Political Gladiator, Political General, and an iconic custodian of Yoruba tradition whose reign brought peace, cultural preservation, and community development to Igbajo land.”
He praised the monarch for his humility, wisdom, and impactful leadership, noting that his contributions to politics and Yoruba culture would continue to inspire many.
“The transition of Oba Philip Adegboyega Famodun III is a significant loss to the traditional institution, the Yoruba cultural heritage, and the Igbajo people whom he served with distinction,” Adewinmbi wrote.
He urged the people of Igbajo to uphold the unity the departed monarch tirelessly worked for.
He prayeed for the peaceful repose of the monarch’s soul and comfort for the family and the community.
Meanwhile, the Gbeleru Royal Family of Igbajo has formally announced the monarch’s demise.
In a statement signed by Prince David Adekunle Famodun, the family confirmed that the 30th Owa of Igbajoland passed away on Friday, November 28, 2025, after a brief illness.
Prince Famodun recalled that the departed Oba was installed and presented with the staff of office on November 24, 2022, by former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.
Although his appointment was later challenged by a white paper issued by Governor Ademola Adeleke, the Osun State High Court reinstated him on January 30, 2025.
The statement highlighted Oba Famodun’s efforts in fostering unity, peace, and development across Igbajoland.
“His leadership and vision left an indelible mark on the community. He will be remembered for his peaceful nature, exceptional wisdom, and tireless contributions to community development,” the family wrote.
Oba Adegboyega Famodun, aged 67, is survived by his wife and children.
Funeral arrangements and further announcements are expected to be released by the family and the Igbajo Traditional Council.
