Osun State House of Assembly has passed into law a bill establishing islamic and traditional marriage registrations.

Sponsored and drafted by the lawmaker representing Osogbo State Constituency, Hon Lawal Bamidele Rasheed, the bill sought to provide formal legal recognition for marriages conducted under Islamic and traditional customs.

Before the bill’s passage, Lawal explained that the new law would ensure that Islamic marriages are properly documented and legally recognized.

He emphasized that the legislation also makes provision for all wives first, second, third, and fourth to be officially eligible to obtain marriage certificates, thereby safeguarding their rights under the law.

According to him, the initiative aims to promote equity, transparency, and proper record keeping of marriages solemnized in line with Islamic and traditional values.

He added that the measure will also help to reduce disputes related to marital status, inheritance, and other legal matters that often arise due to lack of formal registration.

The passage of the bill reflects the commitment of the Osun State House of Assembly to uphold inclusiveness, cultural respect, and legal clarity in marital institutions.

The new law is expected to strengthen the legal framework governing marriage registration in Osun State and ensure that all forms of marriage conducted within the state enjoy equal recognition and protection under the law.
