- says it’s ‘political hatchet job’
By John Dike, Osogbo
The Senate Deputy Minority Leader, Senator Lere Oyewumi, has dismissed as false and mischievous the rumour circulating on social media and some online platforms of his planned defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
His media unit, in a statement on Sunday, described the report as a “political hatchet job” deliberately concocted by opponents to mislead the public and sow disunity within the PDP.
It said, “Our attention has been drawn to a widely circulated rumour disseminated across various media platforms alleging that the esteemed Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Lere Oyewumi, is presently engaged in clandestine deliberations with principal figures within the African Democratic Congress (ADC),” the statement read.
“We unequivocally and categorically refute the entire contents of the aforementioned report, classifying these assertions as fundamentally inaccurate, profoundly malicious, and an unmistakable, deliberate machination orchestrated by political adversaries.”
The media unit emphasized that Senator Oyewumi is not contemplating any form of defection from the PDP and remains a loyal and dedicated member of the party.
It said, “Senator Lere Oyewumi is not only a committed member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but also a principal officer in the Senate, currently serving diligently as the Senate Deputy Minority Leader.
“He is not, and has never been, in talks with the ADC, nor is he negotiating with any other political party regarding a potential move ahead of the 2027 election.
“His political focus remains squarely within the PDP, the platform under which he was overwhelmingly elected by the good people of Osun West Senatorial District.”
The statement further noted that Senator Oyewumi remains steadfast in his commitment to providing purposeful and effective representation for his constituents, dismissing the rumour as a distraction from his ongoing legislative responsibilities.
It said, “The Distinguished Senator remains focused on fulfilling his mandate to deliver quality representation to his constituents in Osun West. He views the propagation of these baseless rumours as a regrettable distraction from the critical legislative and oversight duties he is executing for the benefit of his district and the nation at large.”
Reaffirming Senator Oyewumi’s alignment with Osun State Government, the statement reiterated his unwavering loyalty to Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration and its developmental agenda.
It said, “We reiterate Senator Oyewumi’s full and unwavering commitment to the administration of His Excellency, Senator Ademola Adeleke, the Executive Governor of Osun State.
“He stands in absolute solidarity with the Governor’s vision and ongoing efforts to transform Osun State and improve the lives of its citizens.
“Any suggestion of friction or planned departure aimed at undermining the administration is wholly fabricated.”
The media unit urged members of the public and the PDP faithful to disregard the false report and remain focused on unity, peace, and progress within the party.
“The public and party members are hereby advised to disregard the speculative report and treat it with the contempt it deserves.
“Senator Oyewumi encourages all PDP members and stakeholders to focus on collective efforts that promote good governance, strengthen party unity, and advance the sustainable development of Osun State.”
