The crash involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number KTG 100YL, which was carrying 21 male passengers at the time of the incident.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC revealed that the tragic crash was caused by speed violation and wrongful overtaking, resulting in the driver losing control of the vehicle during the night journey.
Of the 21 passengers onboard, 10 were confirmed dead on the spot, while 11 others sustained varying degrees of injuries, including deep cuts, fractures, and bruises.

Reacting to the incident, the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, mni, expressed deep sorrow over the avoidable loss of lives. He identified night travel, excessive speeding, and reckless overtaking as recurring causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian highways.
He warned commercial drivers to desist from night journeys and urged them to comply strictly with road safety regulations.
“Passengers must remain vigilant and proactive. Speak out when a driver is being reckless. Silence in the face of danger can lead to death,” the Corps Marshal cautioned.
He added that the Corps will intensify enforcement against overloading and ramp up its advocacy against night travel, especially along high-risk corridors across the country.
The Corps Marshal further called on passengers and other road users to adopt a culture of safety, reminding them that road safety is a shared responsibility.
“We urge all road users to report reckless drivers by dialing the FRSC toll-free number 122 or by contacting the nearest FRSC patrol team or security agency,” he said.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to preventing future tragedies through stricter enforcement, public education, and collaboration with transport unions and stakeholders.
