Osun State Security Network Agency, popularly known as the Amotekun Corps, has confirmed a deadly ambush on its operatives while responding to a distress call from residents of Akinlalu, a community in the Ile-Ife axis of the state.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, led to a violent confrontation between the corps and suspected armed hoodlums.
According to official reports, the operatives had been dispatched from the Amotekun Command in Ile-Ife following an emergency alert from local residents, who reported that suspected bandits were invading farmlands in the area.
Four Amotekun operatives, riding motorcycles, were mobilized to intervene and safeguard the community. However, while en route to the location, the team was ambushed by armed assailants—believed to be the same group responsible for the reported invasion. During the surprise attack, two service rifles belonging to the corps were seized by the attackers.
Following the ambush, a reinforcement team was immediately deployed, with the intention of approaching the situation peacefully and meeting with the traditional ruler of Akinlalu.
However, upon reaching the T-junction leading into the town, the road was found barricaded. The assailants opened fire on the operatives, triggering a fierce gun battle that lasted for over an hour.
Despite the intensity of the exchange, Amotekun operatives successfully overpowered the attackers. In the aftermath, three individuals—believed to be members of the attacking gang—were confirmed dead. Three others were arrested, while several suspects sustained injuries and fled the scene.
In a follow-up operation, the two stolen firearms were recovered, along with Amotekun uniforms and berets allegedly used by the hoodlums to impersonate security personnel. The items were found in a hideout believed to be linked to the attackers.
Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Dr. Adekunle Isaac Omoyele who confirmed the story condemned the ambush in strong terms.
He reaffirming the corps’ commitment to protecting lives and property across Osun communities.
“This cowardly ambush will not deter our operatives from carrying out their duties. The safety and security of our people remain our utmost priority. We will intensify efforts to root out criminal elements threatening peace in our communities,” he said.
