Osun State Government has organized a two-day training titled Imole Circular Economy and Waste-to-Wealth Training, aimed at empowering youths and women to turn waste into economic opportunities.
The exercise, which was part of its commitment to sustainability and innovation, was held at the Osun State Assets Management Building in Osogbo.
Prof Chinwe Obuaku, Lead Technical Consultant to the Governor on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, explained that the initiative was designed to equip participants with the skills to transform waste into valuable products.
She told reporters that the groundbreaking programme is the first of its kind in the state and aligns with the one-year anniversary of the Imole Recycling Hub.
The hub’s mission, she said, was to promote green entrepreneurship, institutionalize recycling, and create inclusive opportunities for women, youths, and other players in the waste management value chain.
Her words, “We’re building an ecosystem where participants can become recyclers, upcyclers, and waste pickers – turning what was once considered useless into a source of income,” she said. “This initiative ensures no one is left behind as we work towards achieving our climate action goals.”
She added that the government’s role extends beyond policy implementation, encouraging participants to take full advantage of the new opportunities and to serve as environmental advocates in their communities.
Also addressing attendees, Oyewole Fatai Oladosu, General Manager of the Osun Waste Management Agency, emphasized the importance of shifting mindsets about waste.
“Nothing is truly waste—unless we waste it,” Oladosu said. “This training introduces a modern, standardized approach to turning waste into products that serve humanity and the environment.”
