The Amotekun Corps has warned that it would deal decisively with any persons or organisations that threaten the peace in Osun State under whatever guise.
Particularly, the home-grown security outfit, strongly warned individuals or groups planning to engage in alleged secret cult-related activities under the guise of symbolic date celebrations.
Intelligence gathered by the Corps confirmed credible indications that certain cult groups planned to mark Monday, July 7, popularly referred to as “7/7”, with unlawful gatherings, nocturnal meetings, or violent initiations, all of which pose serious threats to public safety and the rule of law.
However, in a press statement by the Amotekun Command Headquarters in Osogbo, and signed by the Corps Commander, Chief Adekunle Omoyele, the corps warned that it would not tolerate any form of cultism, secret society meetings, or acts capable of disturbing the peace of the state.
Omoyele warned, “We have received reliable intelligence pointing to possible activities by cult groups seeking to take advantage of the 7/7 date for their nefarious operations. Let it be known that Osun State remains a land of peace and law and order.
“Anyone found violating the laws of the state in the name of cultism or any secret gathering will face immediate arrest and prosecution”.
He further stressed that the state government, through its robust security apparatus, has empowered the Amotekun Corps to deal decisively with any threats to the peace and security of the citizenry.
Omoyele reiterated the Corps’ zero-tolerance policy towards cultism, stating that such vices have no place in a progressive and law-abiding society.
“No individual or group, no matter how connected or organized, will be allowed to disrupt public order.
“Our officers and men are on red alert across all local government areas. We are working in close synergy with the police, civil defence, DSS, and other sister agencies to ensure proactive enforcement,” he said.
The Amotekun Corps also called on community leaders, religious bodies, traditional rulers, and parents to advise their wards against getting involved in such unlawful acts.
Omoyele urged residents to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting suspicious movements or gatherings within their communities.
“Security is a collective responsibility. We need the cooperation of all well-meaning citizens to safeguard our streets, schools, markets, and public spaces.
“We ask the public to speak up and report anything unusual even before it escalates,” he added
Residents are encouraged to use the Corps’ emergency lines and local security outposts to make timely reports, assuring them that all information would be treated with strict confidentiality.
Over the past few years, the symbolic 7/7 date has been linked with a spike in cult-related violence in some parts of southwestern Nigeria. Several state governments have since increased surveillance and community policing measures to curb such activities.
Osun Amotekun, since its establishment, has played a leading role in such efforts through intelligence-led operations and grassroots collaboration.
Public reactions to Amotekun’s proactive stance have been largely positive, with many Osun citizens expressing confidence in the Corps’ ability to keep the state safe.
A resident of Osogbo, Mrs. Aderonke Akinwale, applauded the warning. “We don’t want any bloodshed or unrest in our communities. I thank Amotekun for always being ahead and working hard to protect us,” she said.
Similarly, the chairman of a local vigilante group in Ilesa commended the cooperation between grassroots security outfits and Amotekun. “We are on standby to support the Corps in any way we can. Cultism is evil, and we must stamp it out,” he said.
Omoyele assured the public of the Amotekun Corps’ unflinching dedication to the security and well-being of all residents in the state. He noted that the Corps remains committed to its founding mission — to defend the people, protect communities, and uphold peace and order without compromise.
“We will not rest. We will not allow criminals to take over. Osun belongs to all of us and together, we will keep it safe.”
