Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has warned radio stations in the state against breaching the national broadcasting code
He asked them to desist from repeated violations of the code and to stop enabling incitement to violence through their platforms.
Also, he cautioned opposition politicians against stoking unrest in the wake of recent judicial pronouncements on the leadership of local government councils.
In a statement by the Governor’s spokesmam, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke expressed displeasure with the conduct of certain radio stations, accusing them of airing inciting comments and denying fair hearing to those being targeted on air.
“It is unacceptable for any broadcaster to allow libelous and seditious remarks against public officials without granting equal opportunity for response,” the statement read.
As a corrective measure, the Governor directed the Commissioner for Information to summon General Managers of the affected stations for an urgent briefing, warning that sanctions may follow if violations persist.
While reaffirming his administration’s commitment to press freedom, the Governor stressed that responsible journalism demands strict compliance with broadcasting regulations.
On the political front, he condemned what he described as growing attempts by opposition figures to incite violence, particularly after the recent Court of Appeal ruling on the status of local council leadership.
He referenced interviews by some opposition leaders who allegedly encouraged defiance of lawful authority and warned that security agencies will not hesitate to take decisive action against anyone attempting to disrupt public order.
“Our commitment to the rule of law is unwavering,” the Governor declared.
“Those who threaten violence for political ends are acting against the will of the people.”
He further called on the people of Osun State to remain calm and law-abiding, urging them to reject any calls to violence.
“The local government issue is being addressed through the legal process. There must be no further bloodletting. Anyone promoting violence will face the law at the appropriate time,” he added.
