What is Naturopathy?

Columnists

Naturopathy is not just a modality of healing, but a combination of modalities and also a well- defined philosophy of healing.

It is an all encompassing system of healing involving herbal medicine, nutrition, exercise, homeopathy, massage, acupuncture, water therapies, crystal and magnetic healing.

The main goal and modus operandi of Naturopathy is Vis Medicatrix Naturae, meaning: The Healing Power of Nature.

History of Naturopathy :

John Scheel, a New York physician was the very first person to form the word naturopathy in 1895, but he later sold it to Benedict Lust, a grocery shops proprietor.

Benedict Lust was the first person to open a shop with a name: Health Food. He later earned degrees in chiropractic and homeopathic medicine, and he founded the American Naturopathic Association in 1919, to promote his vision of an all natural, drug-free approach to healing.

The 5 Principles of Naturopathy:

#1. Nature is the one and only true healing force. It endows the human body with an innate restorative power to self-heal.

#2. The physician’s job is to teach people that they are their own best healers and to prescribe therapies that strengthen their self-healing powers.

#3. The physician should enlighten and support people in the elimination of bad habits like excessive alcohol intake, smoking, and other excesses.

#4. The physician should help people develop good habits like taking good foods, regular exercise, adequate rest, positive mental attitude, and moderation and balance in all good things.

#5. The physician should encourage his patients to use nature means to prevent, treat or cure illnesses.
