Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has recorded a major academic milestone with the international recognition of one of its alumnae, Dr. Temitope Adeniyi, who has emerged as the only Nigerian among 100 scientists honoured by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Dr. Adeniyi’s feat was brought to public attention through an interview published by The Punch newspaper on January 9, titled “Why I Emerged Only Nigerian Among 100 Scientists Honoured by UNESCO – US-Based Scientist.”

The honour has since continued to attract both national and international attention, further highlighting the quality of academic training and intellectual grooming offered by Osun State University.

Confirming the development in a statement, the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ademola Adesoji, disclosed that the award-winning scientist, formerly known as Temitope Bolaji ODEYOMI before marriage, is a proud alumna of UNIOSUN and an active member of its Alumni Association. She graduated from the institution in 2015 with a Second Class Upper Division, demonstrating academic excellence and discipline from her undergraduate days.

Dr. Adeniyi studied Physics with Electronics at the University, where her undergraduate research project was supervised by Professor Olusegun Alabi, a senior and distinguished academic in the department.

The solid academic foundation she received at UNIOSUN, the statement noted, played a significant role in shaping her research career, which has now earned global recognition.

Reacting to the honour, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, described the achievement as a strong validation of UNIOSUN’s commitment to producing graduates who are academically sound and globally competitive.

According to him, the recognition reflects the University’s emphasis on quality teaching, effective mentorship, and a robust research culture. He added that Dr. Adeniyi’s success aligns with UNIOSUN’s vision of nurturing graduates who contribute meaningfully to knowledge advancement, innovation, and societal development.

The University further described Dr. Adeniyi’s journey—from an undergraduate student at UNIOSUN to a United States–based scientist recognised by UNESCO—as a powerful source of inspiration to current students and a clear testament to the institution’s academic philosophy.

Osun State University congratulated Dr. Temitope Adeniyi on the well-deserved honour, celebrating her as a worthy ambassador of the institution, while reaffirming its commitment to sustaining a conducive academic environment that empowers students to excel both locally and internationally.
