Afenifere, the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, has called on governors of South West states to leverage the recent United Nations recognition of the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, by equipping the outfit for improved effectiveness and regional security.

The body, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jare Ajayi, described the international acknowledgment as a morale booster and a global endorsement of Amotekun’s relevance and impact.

It said, “The recognition of Amotekun by the United Nations is unprecedented in this part of the world.

“Its invitation to participate in meetings of UN-affiliated bodies on security and human rights is a huge morale booster.

“It validates the foresight of those who created and sustained the outfit.”

The statement also noted that the UN’s declaration of July 7 as Amotekun Day represents a symbolic milestone, urging state governments to see the development as a call to action to invest in the corps’ capacity and equipment.

The global recognition was formally announced last week by Ambassador Peer Stafsen, President of the World Peace organization, during the presentation of a Certificate of Affiliation to the Ondo State Amotekun Commandant, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, in Akure.

Afenifere hailed the development as further proof that Amotekun is a visionary initiative, emphasizing that its survival and progress despite numerous challenges reflect the commitment of South West leaders to protecting their people.

“This recognition confirms that setting up Amotekun was a step in the right direction. Its survival through the years shows the resilience and commitment of those behind it,” the group said.

Reiterating its long-standing demand for true federalism and state policing, Afenifere also urged the federal government to expedite the establishment of state police as a crucial measure to curb insecurity and crime nationwide.

It said, “We once again call for the urgent establishment of state police and the provision of necessary support for security agencies, so that crime and banditry can be reduced to the barest minimum.”
