Trouble from the past

Reflection for the day

By Olubunmi Adebayo

*Your life can be troubled because of the deeds of your parents.*

*Take a look at this :*

*She was ravishingly beautiful. She was so beautiful that the king of a whole nation was ready to commit adultery with her and damn the consequences.*

*Not only was the king ready to commit adultery with her alone, the king ended up killing the husband of the woman because of the consequences of his intimacy with her.*

*Please read the story in some details :*

*2 Samuel 11: [3] And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?*
*[4]And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.*
*[5]And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.*
*[14]And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.*
*[15]And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.*
*[16] And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were.*
*[17] And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.*

*You may be tempted to think that the death of Uriah was the end of the evil that David committed in sleeping with his wife and in ultimately killing him.*

*It certainly went far beyond this.*

*_This is where this story should bother you_ : in the account of the evil committed by David above, the following befell his children who were not party to the deeds of their father :*

*1) David’s daughter, Tamar ended up being raped :*

*2 Samuel 13: [1]And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.*
*[11]And when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister.*
*[12]And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly.*
*[13] And I, whither shall I cause my shame to go? and as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee.*
*[14] Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice: but, being stronger than she, forced her, and lay with her.*

*2) The very first son of David : Amnon, became a rapist as detailed in the story above.*

*3) The children of David, from the account in 1) above, committed the socially unthinkable – incest, as seen in the children of the same parent sleeping together.*

*4) The accounts of items 1 to 3 above degenerated into public stigma and brought ridicule to David and his entire family, the children inclusive. Something almost unheard of in the family of the king of Israel.*

*5) Because of this incident of rape of Tamar, her brother : Absalom, rose up and killed his half brother, Amnon in act of revenge for raping his sister.*

*6) The spirit of rebellion entered into the aggrieved Absalom, and he outmanoeuvred his own father as the king of Israel and dethroned him (2Sam.15:1-37)*

*Without any iota of doubt, David in the case of Bathsheba, obviously lacked self discipline, moral control, emotional restraint and the fear of God, but the consequences of his deeds were terrible and terrifying on his children, in fact, many generations down the line faced the consequences of his very terrible and sinful actions.*

*As I remarked at the very first paragraph above, “your life can be troubled because of the deeds of your parents”.*

*In view of the appalling consequences of David’s actions on his children above, please carefully take a second but critical look at your own life and the issues you are facing.*

Top of the day to you 👍
