Osun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the arraignment of three members of the Allied Truck Transport Association of Nigeria (ATTAN) following a violent confrontation with a FRSC patrol team in Osogbo.
The incident occurred on Saturday, August 9, 2025, along the Osogbo-Sekona route near the main gate of the Osun State Government Secretariat, Abere.
A statement by the Corps Commander Leye Adegboyega, said the altercation began when a patrol team flagged down a mini-truck with registration number APM 499 XA for a seatbelt violation.
The driver, identified as a member of ATTAN, refused to accept the FRSC offence ticket and allegedly called on his union members for support.
Within minutes, a group of approximately 50 men arrived at the scene in union-branded vehicles, blocking the road, disrupting traffic, and threatening public safety.
Despite the escalating tension, the FRSC patrol team leader maintained composure and contacted the Sector Commander, who immediately alerted the Nigeria Police Force, Ataoja Division.
Police officers arrived promptly to de-escalate the situation but were met with resistance, as some union members reportedly attempted to attack and disarm them.
The Sector Commander later arrived at the scene to address the situation and urged the union leaders to seek dialogue rather than resort to intimidation.
He reminded them that the FRSC is mandated by law to enforce traffic regulations and that no individual or group is above the law.
However, the union members reportedly became more aggressive, verbally attacking the Sector Commander and questioning the authority of the FRSC to penalize their members.
The situation turned chaotic, prompting police intervention.
Three persons were arrested by the police at the scene: Olatunde Nasurudeen Abioye, Abdul-Lateef Raheem and Abdullazeez Mudasiru
They were subsequently arraigned before Senior Magistrate A.O. Ayilara on a three-count charge of conspiracy, obstruction of a public highway, and breach of public peace.
The accused were granted bail in the sum of N1 million each, with sureties required to present verifiable means of livelihood within the jurisdiction. The case has been adjourned to September 25, 2025 for trial.
The FRSC expressed appreciation to the Nigeria Police Force and the judiciary for their swift and decisive handling of the matter.
The Command reiterated its commitment to enforcing traffic laws without fear or favour and urged all road users and transport unions to act responsibly.
“Road safety is everybody’s business,” the statement read. “We call on the public to support our efforts and refrain from acts that endanger lives or obstruct lawful enforcement of traffic rules.”
