The Mediterranean cross

The Poet's Corner

By Sola Lebile

They too were here

When in their weary hearts

The beats of crossing there

Detached them off our charts

Say: What contains a kitten

MUST contain a flapping mouse

They open a door way

Upon the Mediterranean water

Across the Maitese pathway

In frigid and chanting waters

They are not fish.

They are not sharks

Swarming into U-rope

Floating down the watery slope

In search a parachuted life

Far and above the teakline

They too have arrived

Many with bloated tummies

Some with bruised faces

Others with withered  hands

This Mediterranean cross

Is a glimpse of toppling dust!

  • U-rope (written to mean Europe)
