The Supreme Court on Monday affirmed the election of Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue state.
It dismissed the appeal by the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate in the March 18, 2023 Benue governorship election, Titus Uba.
The governorship election petition tribunal and the court of appeal in Abuja had affirmed Alia’s election, but Uba who was not pleased with the judgments, approached the apex court for redress.
Alia of the All Progressive Congress was declared the winner of the state’s governorship election in March 2023.
The Catholic priest, was also given a certificate of return by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Faruk Kuta, said the APC candidate polled 473,933 votes to defeat his closest rival, Titus Uba of the Peoples Democratic Party who scored 223,914 votes.
The Election Petitions Tribunal and the Court of Appeal had ruled that Alia was duly elected, with the Appeal Court holding that Uba failed to prove allegations of forgery against the deputy governor, Sam Ode beyond a reasonable doubt.
