Students condemn assault of Osun varsity union President

The National Association of University Students (NAUS), has condemned the recent attack on the Osun State University Students’ Union President, Lady Comrade Adigun Amidat, in Ifetedo community.

In a statement issued by its Chairman in the state, Comrade Olayinka Popoola, the union decried the assault on Amidat, who also serves as its Director of Gender and Campus Intervention

The statement alleged that Amidat was attacked by seven men at the Osun State University Ifetedo campus on January 26, 2025.

Five suspected hoodlums reportedly entered the female hostel in the campus around 9 pm on Sunday, carrying Indian hemp and unspecified hard drugs. Their presence caused panic among students, especially after they were overheard discussing a money ritual renewal.

Students at the hostel immediately alerted the Student Union President, who rushed to the scene despite the distance.

“She was severely beaten until a large number of students mobilized to intervene, forcing the attackers to flee in a Toyota Camry with a car dealer’s plate number.”

The statement accused both the Ifetedo monarch and Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of inaction.

It expressed deep concern over the rising cases of intimidation, assault, and harassment of students in Osun State institutions.

It said, “The union insists that the safety and well-being of students must be a top priority and condemns a situation where university students live in fear on their own campuses.”

The NAUS has issued the following demands to the Osun State Government:

The union called on the Inspector General of Police,the Office of the SSA to the President on Student Engagement, and the Office of the SSA on Student Matters to Governor Adeleke to act swiftly in ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment for students in Ifetedo and across Osun State.

Also, NAUS urged all traditional rulers in Osun State to take responsibility for ensuring peace between students and local communities, rather than harboring or condoning acts of intimidation.

The statement reaffirmed NAUS’ commitment to protecting students and ensuring a safe academic environment across Osun State.
