Security at Christmas

Opinion

The Yuletide is a season of fun, pomp and boisterous global festivities to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. Expectedly, it is a season of mass exodus of people moving, visiting and exchanging gifts.

THE season which also ushers into a new year is characterised by shopping, traveling and huge spending and expectedly attracts criminal attention. In anticipation of the brigandage which the season is globally notorious, the state security corps, the Amotekun has gallantly rolled out the tanks to confront criminal tendencies and ensure that sanity prevails at Yuletide.

THE state commander of the corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye revealed that his men will begin the stop and search exercise of motorists and suspected individuals any moment from now in order to rid the state of criminal elements.

NEEDLESS to say that the stop and search policy is commendable considering the security scare which the people have been subjected to by unscrupulous elements latching on the season to wreak havoc in the state.

AS a full proof mechanism to curtail banditry, we hope the ongoing data base on okada operators in the state will be urgentlycompleted as evidence has shown that many crimes are committed in the state by those using okada. In addition, the security agents must find means to keep a tab on the exodus of foreigners who have taken refuge in the state and okada operation without any form of identity or collateral. Community leaders should be mobilised to synergise with Amotekun personnel for prompt information to curtail criminal elements who exploit black spots particularly in areas where there are no communication signals to commit mayhem.

WE call on motorists in the state to cooperate with Amotekun personnel through courtesy conduct and reciprocal respect by providing basic information or document demanded by them. This is the only way the society can be purged of criminal elements who are desirous of making this festive period unpalatable for innocent and law abiding citizens.

WHILE the government must play an important role in ridding the state of criminals during the yuletide period and beyond, the general public should also take some responsibility, by providing key information about suspicious persons in their environment.

As CP Salami bows out

WITHOUT mincing words, Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, gave a salutary and befitting valedictory assessment of the outgoing state Commissioner of Police, Mr Bolaji Salami, whom he described as a gentleman and a dedicated officer.
IN a society dribbling in indiscipline, lawlessness and corruption, in which police officers and their men are atrociously bedecked with bad and shameless conduct, one is tempted to ask if any just policeman can be found in Nigeria.

THE strong moral characters and integrity of Mr. Bolaji Salami, the Ondo State Commissioner of Police who bows out in a few days time after 30 years of meritorious service, must have stood him out to earn the public accolade at a recent valedictory session held for him by the State Executive Council.

IN his brief but momentous stay in Ondo State, he exuded an exemplary conduct, impeccable service and leadership at critical moments. The Hope rejoices with him for bowing out unblemished. The send-off parties that have been organised by official and non official circles reflect the amount of goodwill garnered by Salami as a mark of love and appreciation for the good works the outgoing officer did in the state.

This is indeed a proud time for him and his family and we believe that the encomiums that have been showered on him should justifiably make him proud of his outstanding performance in the state as a gentleman and officer.

AS CP Bolaji Salami, a proud alumnus of the prestigious University of Lagos bows out from Ondo State, The Hope on behalf of the people wishes him a prodigious success and goodluck in his future endeavours.
