According to the statement: “In order to encourage public participation, we wish to inform the general public that a reward of N5 million is being offered to anyone who provides useful information that leads to the recapture of the fleeing inmates from the Medium Custodial Centre, Ilesa, Osun State.”

The Service urged members of the public to report any relevant information to the nearest security agency. All reports, it assured, will be treated with the highest level of confidentiality and anonymity.

Seven inmates of the Ilesa Medium Security Custodial Centre had reportedly escaped following the damage caused by heavy rainfall.

It was learned that the escape occurred after the facility’s aging perimeter wall collapsed, creating an opportunity for the inmates to flee.

The Deputy Controller of Corrections and Public Relations Officer, Mr. Umar Abubakar, confirmed that the agency has launched a manhunt following the breach in security at the Ilesa facility.

He said, “The force majeure, which occurred at about 0200 hours on Tuesday, 20th May 2025, led to the escape of seven (7) inmates”.

In response to the incident, the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.

According to Abubakar, the service is collaborating with other security agencies and local community leaders to track down and recapture the escapees.

He also appealed to the public for cooperation and urged anyone with useful information to assist in the effort.

“Anyone with information should please contact the nearest security agency or reach out to the NCoS Response Desk via the following numbers: 07087086005, 09060004598, 08075050006,” he said.
