Ondo State Police boss, Mr Adebowale Lawal, has confirmed the arrest of 11 suspects over the recent abduction of six worshippers at a Celestial Church in Uso community, in Owo Local Government Area of the state.
He disclosed this at a press conference in Akure, where he also announced the rescue of one of the six kidnapped worshipers.
The police commissioner said that the suspects were arrested through a joint security operation involving the police, the Nigerian Army, and local vigilantes.
He assured that efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining five victims and dismantle the criminal network behind the attack.
Lawal urged religious leaders across Ondo State to moderate late-night worship activities in view of prevailing security challenges.
He advised churches, mosques, and other worship centres to adopt proactive safety measures, including strict compliance with the state government’s directive on the installation of CCTV cameras.
The police commissioner also called on religious organisations to promptly notify security agencies ahead of large gatherings to reduce vulnerability to criminal attacks.
On the recent violence in Idanre during the APC ward congress, the commissioner revealed that 13 suspects have been charged to court over the attack, which claimed three lives.
Investigations, he said, are continuing to identify other accomplices and ensure justice for the victims.
Lawal further stated that from January to date, the command has recorded multiple arrests for offences including kidnapping, armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms, and homicide. Items recovered during the period include firearms, ammunition, vehicles, and motorcycles, while eight victims were successfully rescued in separate operations.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state and urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
