The Inspector General of Police, IGP Alkali Baba Usman, on Tuesday vowed to ensure the arrest and prosecution of perpetrators of the Sunday attack and killing of many worshipers of St Francis Xavier Catholic Church on Owaluwa Street, Owo.
Immediately, he ordered that “all relevant units of the force and gadgets needed to track and arrest the perpetrators be brought to bare until the culprits of this dastardly act are rounded up expeditiously.”
He gave the assurance through the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of South-West, who also oversees the Force Criminal Investigation Department, DIG Johnson Babatunde Kokumo, during his on-the-spot assessment visit to the scene of the horror.
A statement by the police spokeswoman in the state, SP Funmilayo Odunlami, said that Kokumo, who came as representative of his boss, Usman, visited the Church, and paid a courtesy call on the Olowo of Owo, Oba Gbadegesin Ogunoye.
Thereafter, he visited the victims of the attack in the hospital, where he prayed for their quick recovery and also for the repose of the souls of the deceased.
According to the statement: “The DIG said the unprovoked attack on the Church will be thoroughly investigated as he described the attack as an unfortunate and a monumental loss and such an incident must be properly handled to ensure that all those who took part in this sacrilegious act are brought to book.
“He condoles with the Church, Community and the entire State and also assured the people of the IGP’s order that all relevant units of the force and gadgets needed to track and arrest the perpetrators be brought to bare until the culprits of this dastardly act are rounded up expeditiously.
“In the same vein, the IGP’s Special Squad, IGP’s Intelligence Response Team have also arrived the State to support the Command and ensure the villains are arrested.
“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Oyeyemi Adesoye Oyediran psc, fsi, has also ordered that security personnel be posted to worship centres, market areas and all public places in the command.”
