Osun State has taken a bold step toward accelerating grassroots development with the launch of comprehensive community development plans across six Local Government Areas of the state .
The initiative, driven through a partnership between the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room and the Community Life Project, is designed to promote structured, inclusive, and data-driven growth at the community level.
The benefiting local governments Boripe, Ede North, Ejigbo, Ifedayo, Ife-South, and Oriade are expected to leverage the plans as strategic blueprints for identifying priorities and addressing pressing development challenges.
At the launch event held in Osogbo, Senior Programme Manager of the Community Life Project, Francis Onshor, emphasized that the initiative comes at a critical time when evidence-based planning is essential for sustainable progress.
According to him, the documents were developed through extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including traditional rulers, community leaders, and local government officials.
He noted that the plans reflect real community needs in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, water and sanitation, infrastructure, and security.
“These plans provide a clear framework for aligning development priorities with government policies and budgets, ensuring that resources are directed where they are most needed,” he said.
Onshor further urged ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as local government authorities, to integrate the plans into their annual budgeting processes.
He also called on community leaders to remain actively engaged in monitoring implementation to ensure accountability and tangible results.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Rural Development and Community Affairs, Ganiyu Olaoluwa, commended the initiative and described it as a practical tool for addressing grassroots challenges.
Represented by the Deputy Director of Community Affairs, Abass, the Commissioner assured that the state government would provide the necessary support to ensure successful implementation.
Traditional rulers, including Adedokun Abolarin and Williams Oyesunle Alabi, alongside other stakeholders, called for transparency, accountability, and collective responsibility in executing the plans.
They also urged all tiers of government to ensure timely release of funds to sustain development efforts.
The initiative marks a significant move toward strengthening participatory governance and ensuring that development efforts in Osun are responsive to the actual needs of communities, setting the stage for sustainable and measurable progress across the state.
