The Senator representing Osun West Senatorial District, Lere Kamorudeen Oyewumi, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party, marking another significant shift in the political landscape of the state.
Oyewumi, who was elected on the platform of the PDP in the 2023 general elections, formally registered with the Accord Party at Ward 9 in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State.
His defection was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Timileyin Popoola.
The senator was received into the party by the State Chairman of the Accord Party, Victor Akande, alongside party leaders and supporters who gathered in his hometown to welcome him into the party.
Until his defection, Oyewumi remained the last PDP senator in Osun State following the earlier defections of Olubiyi Fadeyi and Francis Fadahunsi to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The PDP in the state had also suffered setbacks in 2025 when three members of the House of Representatives elected on its platform defected to the APC amid growing internal disagreements within the party
.
Although the Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, defected to the Accord Party in December 2025, Oyewumi had initially remained in the PDP, fueling speculation over his political alignment.
However, the political tide appeared to shift in recent weeks following the defection of six House of Representatives members from Osun State to the Accord Party.
In addition, all 25 members of the Osun State House of Assembly elected on the PDP platform had earlier announced their decision to join the Accord Party in solidarity with the governor.
Explaining the reason for his latest move, the statement said the senator’s decision followed his resignation from the PDP, citing irreconcilable differences within the party and his desire to better serve his constituents.
“Oyewumi’s defection underscores his dedication to effective representation, responsive leadership and policies that drive meaningful development for his constituents,” the statement said.
The development further strengthens the growing political influence of the Accord Party in Osun State ahead of future electoral contests.
