Osun State Government has recommitted itself to promoting healthy living among residents through improved nutrition and sustainable farming practices.
It showcased this at a training workshop organized by the Ministry of Rural Development and Community Affairs, focusing on food, nutrition, and the distribution of agricultural seedlings.
Stakeholders from various government ministries and local communities participated.
Yhe Commissioner for Rural Development and Community Affairs, Aare Ganiyu OlaOluwa, while declaring it open underscored the critical role of nutrition in maintaining health, enhancing growth, and providing energy.
“Food is not just for quelling hunger—it gives us the strength to study, work, and live well,” he said.
Aare OlaOluwa explained that proper nutrition strengthens the immune system and prevents disease.
He expressed optimism that the training would empower participants to make better dietary choices while recognizing the nutritional benefits of locally sourced foods. He also commended Governor Ademola Adeleke for approving the initiative.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Mrs. Otitola emphasized the value of traditional, locally available foods in ensuring nutrition security in rural communities. She encouraged participants to embrace indigenous foods over imported, processed options.
“Local foods are often more nutritious than foreign processed meals,” she noted.
In another presentation, Mrs. Morenike Onaolapo spoke on sustainable agricultural practices, highlighting Osun State’s rich and fertile land as an asset for diverse crop cultivation
She cautioned against the growing reliance on chemical-based farming, warning of its negative impacts on human health, soil fertility, and environmental biodiversity.
The training session concluded with the distribution of agricultural seedlings to participants, reinforcing the state’s commitment to food security and eco-friendly farming.
Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative, stating that the training had broadened their understanding of nutrition and sustainable agriculture. Many pledged to apply the knowledge gained to improve their personal health and community farming practices.
Delivering goodwill messages, Mrs. Yetunde Esan, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning (represented by Mr. Gbadebo Iyanda), and Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development and Community Affairs, Mrs. Ajibola Falode, commended the program for fostering a health-conscious and agriculturally self-reliant workforce.
