Properties valued at N3.9 billion were destroyed by fire incidents across Osun State in the first half of this year.
Making this disclosure, the state’s Fire Service said that it responded to 55 fire incidents between January and June.
According to the data, January and February recorded the highest number of outbreaks, with 15 incidents each, marking a concerning trend in early-year fire emergencies.
Despite the substantial losses, the Fire Service was able to salvage properties estimated at M130.3 billion during the same period.
The report also noted that one person died, while one false fire call was recorded.
The State Fire Service spokesman, Mr. Ibrahim Adekunle, attributed the majority of the fire incidents to human errors and negligence.
He said, “Carelessness with flammable materials and electrical appliances remains the leading cause of these fires.
“We continue to urge residents to adopt safer practices and remain vigilant, especially in homes and markets.”
He noted that the Fire Service has intensified its public education campaigns, routinely visiting markets, religious centres, corporate offices, and public institutions to conduct fire safety awareness and training.
“We educate the public on fire prevention strategies and emergency response procedures. Our goal is to reduce the frequency and impact of fire outbreaks across the state,” he added.
Adekunle commended the state government for its support in strengthening the agency’s capacity, particularly through the procurement of new firefighting equipment.
“We are grateful to Governor Ademola Adeleke for his unwavering support. The government has provided us with seven new fire trucks, including five acquired this year, as well as a water tanker, which have significantly improved our response time and operational efficiency,” he said.
He urged residents to avoid delays in reporting fire incidents and to be extra cautious, especially in domestic environments like kitchens. He also advised the public to always switch off and unplug electrical appliances when not in use.
