The Executive Chairmen of local governments in Osun State, led by Hon. Samuel Idowu Abiodun, have reiterated the urgent need for local government autonomy, emphasizing that it will enhance security and accelerate grassroots development.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to reporters in Osogbo, Abiodun said that while there are currently no legal restrictions on accessing local government funds, only salaries have been drawn so far.
He stressed that local governments must have the authority to employ personnel to monitor and protect their communities, noting that relying solely on state police is insufficient.
“If local governments are truly autonomous, within a year, the public will see tangible improvements in security and other services,” he said.
Abiodun clarified that the ongoing Federal High Court case is not for tenure extension but to determine the official end date of their term, which began on February 10, 2025, stressing that all legal procedures are being followed.
The chairmen appealed to the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) to resume work and collaborate with legitimate local government authorities, urging political neutrality among staff.
Highlighting recent legal victories, including a Supreme Court ruling in their favor, Abiodun affirmed that they are fully in charge of Osun State’s local governments and will soon roll out programs to benefit grassroots communities.
On ALGON leadership, he clarified that he is the officially recognized ALGON chairman in Osun State, and any other claims are illegitimate.
The chairmen pledged transparency and responsible management of all local government funds.
