Osun State House of Assembly has ordered the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Yemi Lawal, to appear before it over plans by the government to disburse cash palliatives to the people.

The House on March 23 announced the suspension of legislative activities for 16 days. It resumed sitting yesterday amid statewide lockdown.

At the plenary, Speaker Timothy Owoeye said: “We are aware of plans by the government to disburse cash palliatives to residents. It is important for the Commissioner for Youths and Sports to appear before the House on Thursday and inform us of the beneficiaries and the modalities for disbursement.”

Governor Adegboyega Oyetola recently ordered payment of N20,000 stipends each to 25,907 vulnerable residents as part of measures to cushion the effect of the lockdown.

Speaker Owoeye has directed the House Committee on Health and principal officers to visit the COVID-19 isolation centres.

He gave the directive at an emergency plenary held to deliberate on COVID-19 and the way forward.

Owoeye said the assembly would be playing its legislative role in ensuring the virus was curtailed.

He said that the emergency session was borne out of the need to support the government in the fight against the pandemic.

The Speaker admitted that the state was in a dire situation and could only achieve more with a functional assembly.

The assembly, he added, was rising up to the challenge by supporting the government to check the spread of the virus.
