One killed in Osun cult clash

One person has been killed in a violent clash between two rival cult groups at Oke Ola area in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

He was reportedly shot in the head during a gun battle with a rival cult hroup, and died instantly.

Confirming the incident which happened on Sunday, the state police spokesman, Abiodun Ojelabi,a Deputy Superintendent of Police, SP, stated that the crisis was brought under control following the swift intervention of police operatives.

He said,“It was the police team that went to the scene of the incident that restored normalcy in the area”.

Ojelabi added that armed policemen have been deployed to maintain surveillance in the area while investigations are ongoing.

“At the moment, we are on the trail of the culprits (the cult members), and they will be made to face the law when arrested,” he stated.

He urged residents to promptly report any breach of the law or suspicious activity to security agencies.

It was gathered that the clash broke out when suspected members of a cult group, who were part of a masquerade procession, allegedly encroached on the territory of a rival group.

The confrontation reportedly escalated into a gun battle, during which one person was shot in the head and died on the spot.

SP Ojelabi further confirmed that a special tactical squad, along with other armed personnel, has been deployed to the area to prevent further escalation.
