Finals of the Basic Education School Sports Competition, BESS, will hold tomorrow, 5th May, 2025 at the St Thomas Aquinas College Sporting Arena, Akure from 10 o’ clock.
This was in a statement by the Director of Information, Prince Bolu Diesel Ajijo, Anipr,
He said the competition, being organised by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), in conjunction with the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (ODSUBEB) brings together 180 pupils (athletes) and 40 officials from the nine zones of Ondo State, all vying for excellence in various tracks and field events.
The events include long jump, high jump, Scrabble, 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m relay, Chess Table Tennis and the highly anticipated football final.
Speaking on the essence of this annual event earlier the Executive Chairman of ODSUBEB, Rt. Hon. Victor Olabimtan said it is aims to promote physical education, teamwork, and healthy competition among pupils in the State.
According to him, it is also designed to provide a platform for students to showcase their talents, build confidence, catch them young and develop essential life skills
Notably, the Ondo State contingent has been on a winning streak, having won both the South West Regional and National Finals of the maiden edition of the tournament in 2024 held in Ado Ekiti and FCT Abuja, respectively.
Each zone is expected to put up a strong performance in the state finals which promises to be an exciting event, with pupils from across the state set to showcase their skills and sportsmanship.
Ondo State Governor Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa is expected to declare open the event as Special Guest of Honor to be supported by top Government functionaries while ODSUBEB boss Olabimtan is the Chief Host.
The competition is open to the public, and spectators are encouraged to attend and cheer on their favorite teams as medals are given to the Overall Winner, First Runner Up, Second Runner Up and March Past Winner.
