Ondo State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, has threatened to sanction any of its members caught violating the dusk till dawn curfew ordered by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN.
Akeredolu had imposed the curfew to curb the spread of COVID-19 after a third person tested positive in the state.
He said he had received reports that his earlier ban on large gatherings was not being adhered to by night clubs and beer parlours.
Chairman of Ondo chapter of the NURTW, Comrade Jacob Adebo, who spoke with journalists in Akure said the union was concerned about reports that some commercial drivers were yet to comply with the dusk to dawn curfew order.
Adebo disclosed that the union has set up special patrol team to nab any of its members that violated the order.
Adebo stated that the dusk to dawn curfew was to halt the uncontrollable movement of persons at night into the state with attendant security implications.
He said he has summoned the leadership of all branches of NURTW and warned them on the imperative of strict adherence as well as mobilising all drivers to provide necessary support.
“We have set up a special patrol because our Unions across states respect one another. Any branch chairman who allows his members to flout the curfew will not find it funny because we are serious about this decision. I am however confident that our members will comply.”
Adebo also raised concerns about the conduct of some policemen in enforcing the curfew and stressed the need for professionalism on their part.
