The Ondo State House of Assembly on Thursday screened and confirmed Olayide Adelami as the Deputy Governor of Ondo State.
The development came 24 hours after the governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa picked Adelami as the deputy governor-nominee and sent his name to the Assembly for screening and approval.
The Assembly confirmed the nominee after the consideration of a report by the House selection committee presided over by the Speaker, Mr Olamide Oladij, during the plenary session of the Assembly.
The House had earlier conducted a screening exercise for the nominee at the Assembly complex before the plenary.
Earlier during the plenary, the Clerk of the House, Jaiyeola Benjamin, had read a letter forwarded to the House by the State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Wednesday for the consideration of the nominee for the position of Deputy Governor.
After the submission of the report, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Abayomi Akinruntan recommended the confirmation of the appointment of the nominee, affirming that Adelami had been properly screened.
The Majority Leader of the House, Mr Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi moved the motion for the report to be considered and the nominee to be confirmed and the motion was seconded by Felix Afe representing Akoko North West 2 Constituency.
The Speaker, Oladiji who ruled for the confirmation congratulated the Deputy Governor designate, urging him “to put in his best and pledged the house support to the executive for the people to enjoy more democracy dividend.
His confirmation was a sequel to the submission and consideration of the screening committee headed by the Speaker of the Assembly.
Submitting the report, at the plenary, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Abayomi Akinruntan, recommended the confirmation of the appointment of the nominee.
Akinruntan affirmed that the nominee has been properly screened by the lawmakers and the committee.
According to him “the nominee responded to all questions raised by the Committee in a very eloquent and explicit order.
“He has a clear understanding of the position, he possess the required academic qualifications, physically, mentally and emotionally stable and fit to accomplish the task.
“The nominee possess the required experience, Charisma and the much needed exposure to function effectively.”
The Majority leader of the House, Hon Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, therefore, moved the motion for the consideration of the report and the confirmation of the nominees.
Ogunmolasuyi’s motion was seconded by Felix Afe representing Akoko North West 2.
The Speaker, Rt Hon. Oladiji, thereafter ruled that the nominee be confirmed.
Oladiji thereafter congratulated the Deputy Governor’s designate and urged him to put in his best.
He also pledged the House support to the executive for the people of the state to enjoy a more democratic dividend.
Responding, Adelami appreciated the governor for his nomination and promised not to betray the confidence reposed in him.
Adelami equally appreciated the lawmakers for his screening and confirmation and promised to promote a harmonious relationship between the two arms of governments
The deputy governor was a retired Deputy Clerk to the National Assembly.
He was a governorship aspirant of the ruling All Progressive Congress in 2020.
In his response, Adelami appreciated Governor Aiyedatiwa for nominating him, promising not to betray the confidence reposed in him.
