Following the expiration of their six months’ tenure, the 18 interim Local Government chairmen and 203 Supervisory Councillors in Ondo State, were on Thursday sacked by the State House of Assembly.
This was announced at the Assembly’s plenary held in its chambers at the state capital.
The dissolution of the councils’ temporary management committee members, who were inaugurated by the Assembly on December, 2018 for a six months’ term, took effect from June 13, 2019.
Subsequently, the House ordered the caretaker chairmen to handover to their Directors of Local Government Administration, DLGA, of their respective councils (DLGA) with immediate effect.
While moving the motion for the dissolution, the majority leader, Hon Maito Jamiu, said that their tenure expired on Thursday.
According to him, following the receipt of a letter from the Executive six months ago, the committees were approved by the House to oversee the affairs of the local governments by virtue of the state laws.
It was seconded by the deputy speaker, Hon Iroju Ogundeji.
Also on Thursday, the House confirmed the appointment of Mr Rotimi Okeowo, Chief Joel Magi and Mr Isaac Adeleke Itiola as members of the state civil service commission.
The three were earlier screened and recommended for confirmation by the House selection committee.
Besides, seven executive bills passed through first reading at the plenary.
They include a bill to amend the law for the Ondo State Education Endowment Fund, a bill to amend the law to make provisions for the Registration and Inspection of private institutions, the establishment of a private health institution registration unit, a bill for a law to provide for the retirement age of professors, academic, and non-academic staff of universities and other tertiary institutions in Ondo State.
