The All Progressives Congress (APC) has disqualified former National Secretary of the party, Senator Iyiola Omisore, alongside six other aspirants from participating in its forthcoming governorship primary election in Osun State.
According to the party’s screening committee, the affected aspirants failed to meet the mandatory constitutional requirement of securing sponsorship from at least five fully registered and financially up-to-date APC members in each of Osun State’s local government areas.
The committee cited Articles 9.3(i) and 31.2(ii) of the APC Constitution, as well as Paragraph 6(c) of the party’s guidelines, as the basis for the disqualification.
The other disqualified aspirants include:Benedict Olugboyega Alabi, former Deputy Governor;
Dotun Babayemi, former governorship aspirant;Akin Ogunbiyi, business mogul;
Senator Babajide Omoworare, former federal lawmaker; Kunle Adegoke (SAN), legal practitioner; and Babatunde Haketer Oralusi, political strategist.
The committee’s report noted that none of the seven aspirants provided the required documentary evidence of sponsorship across all local governments, a condition the APC insists is non-negotiable for eligibility.
Meanwhile, the screening panel has cleared two aspirants to participate in the primary: Mulikat Abiola Jimoh, and Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, former Commissioner for Finance in Osun State.
Their clearance means the race for the APC ticket has now narrowed to a two-horse contest.
The development has generated mixed reactions in party circles, with some party members describing the disqualification of seven high-profile figures as unprecedented in the state’s political history.
