NUJ asks Southwest governors to tackle worsening insecurity, rising fuel prices, power failure

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in the South West has called on the six governors in the region to prioritise safety of lives and property in view of the security challenges confronting the region.

It also asked the governors to urgently introduce meaningful palliative measures like cheap transportation system, to cushion the adverse effects of the rising pump price on the masses.

In a communique issued at the end of its B Zonal meeting held in Ibadan Oyo State capital on Saturday, the union said, “In light of the rising wave of insecurity, the Zonal Leadership calls on the Governors of the South-West states to prioritize the safety of lives and property.

“This should be achieved through enhanced funding and the provision of adequate logistical support for all security agencies especially AMOTEKUN Corps, to effectively curb criminal activities within the region.”

On economic intervention and palliatives, it said, “The NUJ Zone B notes with concern the economic hardship occasioned by the recent increase in fuel prices amidst middle East unrest.

“The meeting urges State Governments within the Southwest to urgently introduce robust palliative measures such as cheap transportation system, to cushion the adverse effects of the rising pump price on the masses.”

On energy and power generation, it said,
“Following the deregulation of the electricity sector, the Zone encourages South-West Governors to take full advantage of the new legal framework.

“The meeting advises the state governments to invest aggressively in independent power generation and distribution to improve energy stability and stimulate economic growth within their states.”

“COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF B-ZONE (SOUTH WEST) MEETING OF THE NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS (NUJ) HOSTED BY OYO STATE COUNCIL ON APRIL 11, 2026 IN IBADAN*

The Zonal Leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone B (South-West), met to deliberate on various issues affecting the union, the media profession, and the state of the nation.

The meeting presided over by the Vice President of the Zone, Princess Ronke Afebioye Samo. ​After exhaustive deliberations, the following resolutions were reached:

​1. ADVANCEMENT IN MEDIA TECHNOLOGY;
The Zone expresses its profound appreciation to Google Africa and the American Open University for their foresight in organizing capacity-building training on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for journalists in the Oyo and Ogun State Councils. Recognizing the transformative impact of AI on modern journalism, the Zone appeals to these organizations to extend these vital training opportunities to the remaining states across the South-West to ensure regional digital literacy.

2. PRESS CENTRE FACILITIES;
That the Zone expresses appreciation to the Nigeria’s Minister of Youths Development, Comrade Ayodele Wisdom Olawande for his unprecedented support in carrying out total renovation on major building at the Ondo State Council Press Centre in Akure, asking other Ministers and federal appointees from the Zone to emulate such progressive gesture and support the Media in their respective states.

​3. DISCIPLINARY MATTERS AND CONSTITUTIONAL ADHERENCE:
The Zone upholds the decisions took at the Congress of the NUJ, Ogun State Council to instill discipline, especially suspension and other sanctions against those who flagrantly breached the Union’s  Constitution after the recent election.

4. THREE STATE COUNCILS NEW LEADERSHIP;
The Zone formally congratulated and inducted newly re-elected and elected Executives from the region into the Zonal Executive Council (ZEC). Among them are Wale Olanrewaju, re-elected as Chairman of Ogun Council; Bunmi Adigun (Secretary, Ogun Council); Akeem Abbas (Chairman, Oyo Council); Temidayo Adu (Secretary, Oyo Council); Adeyemi Aboderin (Chairman, Osun Council); and Comrade Olalekan Akindoju (Secretary, Osun Council).

5. ANTI-CORRUPTION COLLABORATION:
(i) The Zonal Leadership applauds the National President of the Union, Comrade Alhassan Yahya and his team for their productive leadership, particularly the partnership with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The Zone Commends Workshop for state leadership of the union, organized recently in Abuja on “Effective Collaboration on Corruption Prevention,” as this will strengthen the Fourth Estate’s role in fostering anti- corruption war for a better society.

(ii) The NUJ Zonal Leaders who took the opportunity provided by the Meeting to pay official courtesy Visit to the Ibadan Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), solicited effective partnership with the anti-graft agency in the war against corruption as it concerns abandoned States and Federal projects scattered across the Southwest region.

6. INFRASTRUCTURE IN SOUTH WEST;
The Zone Applaud the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the ongoing massive Road infrastructure projects being executed nationwide particularly Ibadan-Ilesa road, Sagamu-Ijebu Ode-Ore road, Akure-Ado Ekiti, Ore-Ondo-Akure road as well as  dualisation of Ilesa-Akure-Owo-Benin city road.

However, the Zone draws urgent attention to the deteriorating state of several critical road corridors in the Southwest and demand reconstruction of Ibadan–Abeokuta Road, Owo–Ipele-Idoani-Isua Akoko-Kabba  Road; Ibadan–Iwo–Osogbo Road and Ado Ekiti-Ikare-Ikaram Akoko road, to facilitate safe and seamless movement for citizens.
