The chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, has debunked a viral report alleging the suspension of the Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun.
Ogundoyin, vin a statement on Thursday, vdismissed the report, originally published by an online blog, on July 30, as “entirely false, malicious, and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.”
The blog had reported Egbedun’s alleged suspension ifrom the Conference over purported insubordination and abuse of office, a claim Ogundoyin said had no basis in fact.
He said, “There was no such suspension. No press conference was held in Ibadan or anywhere else, and no such pronouncement was made by me or any authorized representative of the Conference.”
He emphasized that the Conference is a professional body guided by transparency, accountability, and due process in all its operations, including disciplinary matters.
“Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun remains a respected and active member of the Conference who has not been found wanting in any way,” the Speaker of the Oyo State Assembly reiterated.
The Conference also condemned the online blog that ran the false report for what it described as “a baseless fabrication lacking in journalistic integrity.”
It called on the platform to immediately retract the false report and issue a public apology.
Ogundoyin further warned that the Conference reserves the right to pursue a legal action should the platform fail to correct the misleading narrative.
His words, “This is a stark reminder that while freedom of the press is essential, it comes with the responsibility to report truthfully. Fake news must be tackled with urgency.”
The statement has since calmed tensions and reaffirmed the credibility of Speaker Egbedun within the national legislative community.
