A yet-to-be-identified man was rescued from a river in the Testing Ground area of Osogbo, Osun State, on Wednesday after reportedly jumping from a bridge into the overflowing waters.
The incident, which occurred along the East Bypass Road shortly before noon, caused panic among passersby and residents.
According to eyewitnesses, the man had been wandering around the area for several days before the incident.
One of the shop owner around the area who spoke to our correspondent A shop owner said the victim had been loitering near the river since Saturday and that he appeared to be mentally unstable.
“He had been around the Testing Ground area since Saturday. His behavior suggested he might not be mentally sound,”
“When he jumped into the river, I screamed, and others nearby rushed to help. Some brave volunteers entered the water and managed to rescue him.”
The victim at the time of rescue mission was found naked but was pulled out of the river alive.
However, the Emergency responders from both the Osun State and Federal Fire Services arrived shortly after the rescue.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Osun State Fire Service, Adekunle Ibrahim, said: “It was a joint operation with the Federal Fire Service. By the time we arrived, he had already been rescued by residents. We handed him over to the community for further care.”
As of the time of filing this report, the man’s identity and current condition remain unknown.
