The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given an update on the ongoing process for the registration of new political parties in Nigeria, following its earlier announcement on September 11, 2025.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, mni, the Commission said it reviewed progress made so far at its regular meeting held the same day.

According to the statement, INEC had earlier briefed 14 pre-qualified political associations on September 17, 2025, after which it opened a dedicated online portal for the upload of required documents between September 18 and October 18, 2025.

By the close of the portal at midnight on Friday, October 18, eight of the 14 associations successfully completed the submission of all necessary documents and information. The associations are:

1. All Democratic Alliance (ADA)

2. Citizens Democratic Alliance (CDA)

3. Abundance Social Party (ASP)

4. African Alliance Party (AAP)

5. Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA)

6. Green Future Party (GFP)

7. National Democratic Party (NDP)

8. Peoples Freedom Party (PFP)

INEC stated that the next stage will involve a detailed assessment and verification of the submitted documents to ensure compliance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties (2022).

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and inclusivity, the Commission emphasized that the registration process aims to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic system and encourage wider political participation.

“The Commission wishes to reaffirm its commitment to inclusivity, transparency, and the deepening of Nigeria’s democratic culture,” the statement read.
