The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has pledged that security forces will reclaim communities overrun by bandits in Kwara State and other parts of the country.
He assured that the Nigeria Police Force would deploy all necessary operational and administrative strategies to restore peace and security in areas affected by banditry and violent attacks.
The police chief made the commitment on Monday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, while addressing officers and men of the Kwara State Police Command during his maiden visit to the state since assuming office.
He stressed that criminals would not be allowed to take control of communities, urging police personnel to remain resolute in the fight against crime.
“Criminals cannot chase us out of our communities. We are the owners of the towns, and we will not allow that to happen,” Disu said.
“We must take back our homes and communities. That is why I am here to assure you that together we will reclaim them.”
The IGP noted that he was familiar with the security challenges confronting Kwara State, explaining that his visit was also aimed at encouraging officers currently involved in ongoing operations against bandits and other criminal elements.
“I know Kwara State and the problems we are facing. I am in the state for an operation,” he said.
Disu commended officers of the command for their dedication and sacrifice in maintaining security, while urging them to intensify their efforts in combating crime across the state.
“I have come to say thank you for everything you have been doing to assist us, but at the same time I want to ask for more cooperation,” he added.
The IGP also acknowledged the support of the Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, noting that the state government had provided resources and logistical support to assist the police command in its operations.
He disclosed that he had earlier visited the governor to express appreciation for the administration’s continued support for security agencies.
“I visited Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to thank him.
He has been very supportive by providing a lot of things to assist the police command,” Disu said.
The police boss also appealed to residents of the state to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could aid efforts to tackle criminal activities.
Speaking on security challenges in the region, Disu cautioned against profiling entire communities, stressing that not all Fulani herders were involved in banditry or kidnapping.
“I say with all authority that many Fulani people are assisting us in doing our job”.
He urged members of the public to continue sharing useful intelligence with security agencies to improve safety and security across the state.
Disu further assured police personnel that improving their welfare would remain a priority under his leadership.
“I want to give you my word that I will look into the welfare of policemen,” he said.
