After spending 227 days behind bars in neighbouring Benin Republic, Yoruba nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho), may be freed today from detention.
A source close to him said that negotiation with Benin Republic authorities.for his release to get medical attention reached an advanced stage on Thursday morning, with assured expectation that Igboho would be left off the hook latest today.
A statement released on Thursday by the counsel for the detained activist, Yomi Aliyyu, confirmed that negotiations with the Benin Republic authorities had began.
Igboho’s lawyer dismissed reports that the agitator has been released and he is on his way to Germany.
The statement titled: ‘Re: Purported release of Sunday Igboho’, read: “Kindly discountenance any news about the release of Chief Sunday Adeyemo or that he is on his way to Germany. It is not true, please.
“With the assistance of a worldwide renowned professor and Prof Akintoye and lawyers (Falola and myself), we are negotiating for something more comfortable for him than prison to meet his health demand.
“I advise you to remain calm and prayerful.”
Sunday Igboho who has spent over 227 days in Benin Republic prison was arrested in Cotonou on his way to Germany alongside his wife, Ropo Adeyemo.
Recently Benin Republic government had renewed the incarceration of the agitator for another six months, which many have described as illegal.
The 49-year-old agitator had dragged the Republic of Benin before the ECOWAS Court of Justice over his continued detention.
Three weeks after he was declared wanted by Nigeria’s secret police, the Republican Police arrested Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho on the 19th of July, 2021.
Igboho, a campaigner for Yoruba self-determination, was arrested in neighbouring Cotonou, Benin Republic, while trying to travel to Germany.
A local newspaper in the neighbouring country, Banouto, reports quoted Beninise authorities as saying Igboho was nabbed at Cardinal Bernardin International Airport in Cotonou.
He was “disembarked from his plane, arrested by the Beninese police while he was trying to travel to Germany and then transferred to the Cotonou Criminal Brigade.”
